The 81st Annual Meeting of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) will take place in Seattle, Washington (USA), in August 2013.
The program includes eigth workshops, a symposium, pre-meeting and post-meeting study tours, technical tours as well as social and cultural events from August 12 to August 16.
The theme of the symposium on Wednesday, August 14, is “Changing Times: Infrastructure Development to Infrastructure Management”. This theme recognizes that much of the world, including the United States, faces the challenges of managing an aging dam infrastructure during a time when sustainability, safety and security concerns are paramount.Concurrent sessions and a poster session will maximize opportunities for delegates to make presentations.
Eight half-day workshops on Thursday and Friday will highlight new developments and experiences in the long term management of dams. The workshops will focus on current “hot topics” which have been discussed extensively in the United States, and are of interest internationally. Each workshop will cover the U.S. experience, and also discuss the international perspective. USSD Technical Committees will organize the workshops.

The 9th ICOLD EUROPEAN CLUB SYMPOSIUM will be held in Venice, Italy, on 10 – 12 April 2013.
This symposium is organized in the context of the ICOLD European Club activities, and it will be dedicated to “Sharing Experience for Safe and Sustainable Water Storage”.
The aim of the ICOLD European Club is the exchange of information and experiences on matters of common interest, and is pursued by encouraging regular European Symposia and Working Groups about subjects related to the dam design, construction, operation, maintenance and social, environmental and economic aspects of dams and reservoirs. Other eight Symposia have been held since 1993 (Chambery, France). The last Symposium took place in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2010.
The technical contributions for this 9th ICOLD European Club Symposium will be related to the following topics:
- A) Water resources management in Europe
- B) Preservation and development of European hydraulic infrastructure system
- C) An outlook to the future of dams and hydropower: the new challenges
- D) Social/environmental impacts vs. benefits of reservoirs: a still open question
- E) Towards improving and harmonizing dams governance in Europe
Technical visits will be organized on Saturday, April 13th, to dams (including the Vajont dam) and other interesting hydraulic works.
