Course “Risk analysis applied to dam safety management” – Basic Level, April-May 2016

The fourth edition of the Course “Risk analysis applied to dam safety management”, organized by the Spanish National Committee on Large Dams (SPANCOLD), will be conducted in English.
This course will be held in Madrid (Spain) on April 26, May 3 and 10, 2016.
This course aims at providing basic concepts on the application of risk analysis techniques to dam safety management, presenting available tools for risk analysis and lessons learned from real cases in Spain and Europe.

During the course, the benefits of risk-informed dam safety governance will be exposed and discussed.

In addition, the current state-of-the-practice on dam safety management in Spain and worldwide will be presented and discussed (e.g. in Spain, up-to-date dam safety management strategies have been influenced by the publication in 2012 of the SPANCOLD Technical Guide on Dam Safety N.8. Vol.1, titled “Risk Analysis applied to Dam Safety Management”).

After three editions (2013, 2014 and 2015), the course will be first conducted in English (presential and online). This course provides a basic level education in the field of risk-informed dam safety management.

During practical sessions, the software iPresas HidSimp will be used.
This software tool allows to estimate the dam failure probability due to the overtopping failure mode following a simplified approach. The software tool iPresas HidSimp can be downloaded from this link.

Forum on Dam Safety, Lisbon (April 2015)

A Forum on Dam Safety was specifically devoted during the Second International DAM WORLD Conference (DW2015), held in Lisbon (Portugal) on April 21-24, 2015.

The Forum was co-organized by the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) and the World Bank, and covered the state-of-the-practice on national dam safety strategies, with case examples from Spain, Portugal, Brasil and worldwide.

Jessica Castillo, on behalf of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and iPresas, presented lessons learned and current challenges regarding dam safety management in Spain and the benefits of risk-informed dam safety governance.

Course on Risk analysis applied to dam safety management

The first edition of the Theoretical-Practical Course “Risk analysis applied to dam safety management”, organized by the Spanish National Committee on Large Dams (SPANCOLD), under the direction of Prof. Ignacio Escuder, has recently concluded.

This Seminar was held in Madrid (Spain) on September 17, September 24, and October 1, 2013.

The 25 course attendees (full house) included researchers, consultants, contractors, owners, regulators and operators of dams, both from private and public sector. This aspect allowed to enrich the contents by providing a great variety of experiences and points of view on dam safety management.

PortadaGTThe contents of the course were based on the Spanish Technical Guideline on Dam Safety,
nr.8, entitled “Risk analysis applied to dam safety management”, published in December 2012. The Technical Guideline can be downloaded in English from this link.

A series of practical exercises were solved and discussed, including several presentations and debate on real case studies.

During practical sessions, the software iPresas HidSimp was used.
