Forum on Dam Safety, Lisbon (April 2015)

A Forum on Dam Safety was specifically devoted during the Second International DAM WORLD Conference (DW2015), held in Lisbon (Portugal) on April 21-24, 2015.

The Forum was co-organized by the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) and the World Bank, and covered the state-of-the-practice on national dam safety strategies, with case examples from Spain, Portugal, Brasil and worldwide.

Jessica Castillo, on behalf of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and iPresas, presented lessons learned and current challenges regarding dam safety management in Spain and the benefits of risk-informed dam safety governance.

News: “New Spanish Technical Guide on Operation of Dams and Reservoirs”

The Technical Seminar on “Governance and prioritization of hydraulic infrastructure investments”, organized by the Spanish National Committee on Large Dams (SPANCOLD), was held in Madrid on December 11, 2012.

The new Technical Guide No.8, Vol.I, on Operation of Dams and Reservoirs, published by SPANCOLD, was presented during this seminar, opened by Ms. Liana Ardiles López, Director General of Water at the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

The presentation of the Technical Guide “Risk Analysis applied to Management of Dam Safety” included contributions from Arturo Gil García (SPANCOLD), Dr. Ignacio Escuder Bueno (UPV), Dr. Armando Serrano Lombillo (iPresas, UPV Spin-off), and Eduardo Rojo Martínez (IBERDROLA).

The event also included the presentation of the application of risk analysis for prioritizing investments in dam safety to a portfolio of dams of the Duero River Authority.

With 150 attendees, the event was a success and concluded with a panel discussion with participants from organizations such as SPANCOLD, General Directorate of Water, Catalan Water Agency and Ebro River Authority.

Dam Safety 2012, is one of the leading conferences in the United States dedicated to dam safety engineering and technology transfer.

This annual conference is organized by ASDSO (Association of State Dam Safety Officials). This year the conference was held in Denver (Colorado) from September 16-21, 2012.

In addition, the 5th Annual National Dam Security Forum was also held in the Colorado Convention Center and it has provided State dam safety officials, owners, operators and additional stakeholders with a unique opportunity to discuss a variety of technical and non-technical issues pertaining to the safety, security and resilience of the Nation’s dams and related infrastructure. Lori Spragens, ASDSO Executive Director and Enrique Matheu, Department of Homeland Security were Forum Co-Chairs.

Dam Safety 2013 will be held September 8-12 at the Providence Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
